Laughed at my niece's $30 AI art app in January, then she sold a piece for $400 at a Denver show and I felt like a jerk
So back in January my niece showed me this app on her phone, one of those AI image things, and I straight up laughed. I told her making art was about the hand doing the work, the struggle, all that. She just nodded and kept messing with it. Fast forward to last month and she's got a piece in a small gallery show off Santa Fe Drive here in Denver, and somebody paid $400 for a print of it. I went to the show expecting to hate it. Stood there for like 20 minutes staring at this thing and honestly it hit me harder than half the paintings on the wall. She told me she fed it 40 versions of her own sketches first, so it was still her ideas, just a different brush. I still think a prompt alone isn't the same as learning to draw a face, but I was wrong that there's no work in it at all. Where do you all land on this? If somebody pushes their own sketches through a tool and gets a real image out, is that theirs or not?
Watched my buddy do the exact same thing with his photography last year and I had the same dumb reaction at first, thought it was cheating or whatever lol. Dude layers like 5 of his own shots and edits for hours and the end result is 100% his style, just way faster. Your niece sold a piece for $400, that's the only proof you need that whatever she's doing counts.
