TIL why you never assume a plane is grounded just because the chocks are in

Honestly, last Tuesday I walked up to a 737 that had chocks in both wheels and the GPU plugged in. Figured it was dead for the night. Then the APU started spooling up while I was under the nacelle. Learned real quick to always check the cockpit first before crawling under anything. Anyone else have a close call from assuming?

I mean, is it really that serious though? Chocks in means the plane is on the ground, yeah, but it's not like it's gonna start doing donuts or something. The APU spooling up is just the ground power getting ready, it's not like the engines are gonna fire up and blow you away. Maybe it's just me but I've seen guys crawl under planes with the APU running all the time, it's pretty routine. Sounds more like a minor spook than a close call if you ask me. People gotta relax a little, the plane ain't out to get you.

Whoa, hold on, @lopez.karen, did you just say you've actually seen people crawl under a plane with the APU running? That's wild to me, I always thought that was a huge no-go for safety. I mean, I get it's routine for some, but that sounds like a real risk if something went wrong with that ground power.

Nah, that's way too casual.
