Guy training next to me asked why I still tone every wire by hand, and it got me thinking about the old days
I was at a panel swap in Mesa last month and the new kid watched me pull out my toner and asked why I do not just trust the labels. Told him I got burned back in 2009 on a 16 zone house where two runs were swapped at the can, and I chased a ghost zone for three trips before I found it. He laughed and said his last crew never toned anything, they just wired it hot and hoped for the best. That got me thinking about how we used to keep a notebook with every zone written down, and now everything lives in an app on somebody's phone. I still carry that notebook, and I still ring out every conductor before I land it. Anybody else here refuse to give up the old habits even with all the new test gear out there?
