The retired guy in Phoenix who tipped me $60 because I vacuumed his dryer vent
Got called out to a place in Phoenix two months ago for a dryer that took 3 cycles to get clothes dry, and the guy was 82 and had been using the same machine since 1994. He watched me pull about 4 feet of packed lint out of the vent line and asked why nobody had ever done that before. I told him most people just replace the machine or call it dead, and he shook his head and said his wife used to do that chore before she passed and he never knew it mattered. When I handed him the bill he pushed $60 extra into my hand and said I fixed something he didn't even know was broken for 30 years. I still think about that one whenever a customer tells me the dryer is just old. How do you all handle it when a simple vent cleaning turns into a bigger moment than the repair itself?
That happened to me with a lady in Mesa who cried when I showed her the lint I pulled out because her husband always swore the dryer was fine. I just stood there and let her talk it out instead of rushing to pack up my tools, and she ended up telling me stories about him for 20 minutes. Sometimes the fix is the easy part and the real job is just letting people have that moment.
