Unpopular opinion: that $12 thermal fuse tester saved a customer from a house fire in Reno last Tuesday
Last Tuesday I got a call to a rental in Reno where the dryer had cut out mid cycle, and the tenant said it smelled hot near the back. I almost just swapped the fuse and left, but I clipped my cheap tester on the old one first and it read open on both legs, so I pulled the back panel. The vent run was packed with 3 inches of lint right against the blower housing, and the element had cooked itself into a nice brown crisp. Landlord was not happy about the $40 in parts, but I told him a $12 tester and a $9 vent brush beats a $12,000 insurance claim any day. How many of you actually test the fuse instead of just replacing it and hoping?
