The dig director at a site near Tucson told me my field notes were useless, and he was right
Two summers back I was volunteering on a dig outside Tucson and writing stuff like "small pot piece, brownish" in my notebook for three weeks straight. The director sat me down and said nobody could ever use those notes, not even me in six months, because I never wrote depth, grid square, or which layer it came out of. So now every find gets a number, a spot on the grid, and a depth in centimeters before it goes in the bag, even if it's just a rusted nail. Cost me maybe ten extra minutes a day and my notes actually mean something now. Anyone else get read the riot act over field records, and what system do you use?
