I just wasted $40 on a 'premium' keyword tool that gave me the same info as free ones

Read an article last week about how some of these tools just repackage free data. They add a shiny dashboard and call it "pro". The writer said he compared a paid SEO tool's keyword list with Google's own planner. It was almost the same, just sorted differently. Makes you wonder what you're really paying for.

Ouch, that stings. I've totally been there, buying some fancy tool hoping for magic results. Feels like paying for a fancy steak and getting a microwave dinner, doesn't it? What was the tool supposed to do that the free ones couldn't?
