Drove 2 hours to Cherry Springs and forgot my camera's memory card at home
Sat there watching everyone capture the Milky Way while I just stared at the sky with nothing but my phone. Has anyone else had a gear fail ruin a planned photo session?

Man you gotta treat memory cards like you treat gas in your car. Never let it go below half without having a backup. I actually keep an old 32gb card in my wallet at all times for this exact reason. It's not the fastest card but it'll hold enough RAW files to get through a night out. Also worth noting that most people don't realize you can still get good shots without the Milky Way. I've seen some killer shots from just the star trails or even the moonlight illuminating the landscape. Next time try working with what you've got instead of what you wanted.

Oh geez, that's a rough one. I always carry a spare memory card in my bag, but I've definitely left the main one behind before. Just a heads up though, your phone actually can capture the Milky Way if you've got a newer model and a tripod. It's not gonna be as good as a proper camera, but I've gotten some decent shots with my iPhone on a small tabletop tripod by using a 30-second exposure and manual focus. Your mileage may vary, but it's worth trying next time instead of just staring.
