Hit the 40 date mark and it felt like a job interview count
Turned 38 in Austin and realized I'd been on exactly 40 first dates since my divorce three years back. Everyone online says that's a good sample size, that you should know what you want by then. I call bunk. Date 34 was a school teacher who loved board games and hiking, perfect on paper, but I felt nothing when we hugged goodbye. Meanwhile date 12 was a disaster, she spilled wine on my dog, but I still think about her laugh sometimes. Numbers don't tell you anything about chemistry, they just make you feel like you failed a math quiz. Why do we treat dating like a scoreboard instead of just admitting timing and luck do half the work? Has anyone else had a milestone count that made them question the whole approach?
40 first dates isn't really a giant sample when you think about it, since a few of those probably ended after one drink. Your mileage may vary, but I'd say keep chasing the laugh over the checklist.
