Okay so I used to always pick the restaurant for a first date...
I'd spend hours looking up a cool spot, trying to impress. Then, a guy I met last year in Austin just sat there silently for 20 minutes because he hated sushi and I'd picked a sushi bar. Now I always ask, 'Any food you absolutely won't eat?' before making plans. It's a simple text that saves a whole evening of awkward silence. Anyone else have a go-to question they ask before meeting up?

What about asking for their favorite food instead?

Favorite food is a pretty basic question though, it's what everyone asks. I'd rather ask about the weirdest thing they've ever eaten or a meal that brings back a strong memory. That gets you a way more interesting story.

Oh man, that silent sushi date sounds brutal, I feel for you. That's a great question to ask, it just avoids the whole mess. I like what @umamartin said too, asking about a weird food or a memory is a way cooler way to learn about someone.
