Switched from paper maps to Gaia GPS on the JMT and never looked back
I used to be a paper map purist, thought digital would kill the vibe or fail when I needed it most. Last summer did the John Muir Trail over 12 days and brought both, but my phone with the Gaia app saved my butt around Evolution Creek when the trail got vague. The thing that convinced me was the live tracking, I could see exactly where I was relative to the campsite I had marked at 9 miles for the day. Paper maps are great for planning at home but on the trail, zooming in on a tricky pass without stopping to unfold and refold was huge. I still carry a paper backup in case the battery dies, but the app became my main tool by day 3. Has anyone else made the switch after a specific route or section made them question their old system?
