Tried the Eagle Rock Loop in Arkansas in 2 days instead of 3 and my legs are still mad
I did the 27 mile Eagle Rock Loop near Mena last month and decided to push it in 2 days instead of the usual 3, thinking I was in good enough shape. By mile 18 my quads were done and I was stumbling down the Little Missouri section in the dark with a headlamp, which was stupid and I knew it. Has anyone else cut days off a route and regretted it, or am I the only one who does the math wrong on mileage vs elevation?
Been there. What saved me on a similar dumb move was ditching the plan and just stopping when my body said stop instead of pushing to a set campsite. I ate way more than I thought I needed, like a full sandwich at every break, and that made a bigger difference than I expected. On climbs I started taking short 30 second breathers every switchback, which sounds slow but kept my legs from locking up. Cutting the miles isn't worth wrecking yourself in the dark.
