I used to fake a smile for gift cards, now I just hand them back
Got a $25 gift card to a store that closed 2 months before my birthday, and I used to say thanks and stuff it in a drawer for a decade. Now I just say "this place is gone" and hand it back, so has anyone else started doing the honest thing or am I the rude one?

Did they at least wrap it with a receipt so you could return it yourself? You're not rude, you're just saving everyone the trip to a store that doesn't exist anymore.
