Hit my 100th burned batch of rice, finally figured out my old timer was the problem

I hit 100 burned rice pots last Tuesday, which sounds silly but it was a real number I kept track of. It started when I tried that hack of wrapping the pot lid with a dish towel to trap steam, but the towel kept slipping and the burner stayed too high. After 100 tries, I got suspicious and checked my old timer, it was running 4 minutes slow. Has anyone else found that the gadget itself, not the recipe, was ruining their food?
