Update: My "quick" fix of sharpening knives on a coffee mug took 3 weeks to undo

I read online that you can use the bottom of a ceramic mug as a whetstone in a pinch. So I tried it on my main chef's knife and damn if it didn't seem sharper for about a day. Then the edge chipped so bad I couldn't slice a tomato in Oklahoma City last month. Paid $45 to get it professionally re-edged, and that mug trick cost me more time than I saved. Anyone else mess up a decent blade with a hack that should've stayed a meme?
