The DMV actually got faster when I stopped using the online scheduler

I read a state audit report last month that said 78% of walk-in customers at the Sacramento DMV finished in under 35 minutes, while online appointment folks averaged 52 minutes. I thought the report was a typo, so I tried it myself on a Tuesday morning. Showed up at 8am with a ticket for a license renewal, no appointment, and was out by 9:10. The online portal kept pushing me to times two weeks out, but walk-ins get a separate queue with fewer people. My buddy in Fresno tried the same thing and it worked too, though his office had a longer line before opening. Is anyone else seeing this pattern at their local office, or did I just hit a weird lucky window?

I tried the walk-in thing at the Stockton office last month for a title transfer, got there at 7:45am, and was done by 9:05. The online scheduler only had slots like 11 days out, and the walk-in wait was basically nothing because most people still believe the portal is the only way in. My guess is the online system creates a fake bottleneck, all the appointment folks show up at the same time and clog the service windows, while walk-ins trickle in and slide through gaps. I've told like three coworkers about it and two tried it, one in Roseville and one in Modesto, both said it felt way faster even if the line outside looked longer at first. Only catch is if you show up after 10am, then all the appointment people who missed their slots start getting pushed into the walk-in line and it kinda evens out.
