Lost a Saturday regular of 6 yrs over a $2 price bump, still bugs me

Raised my cut from $28 to $30 back in March and my 8am Saturday guy, Dennis, just stopped showing up. Saw him getting cut at the shop on 5th last weekend and he said it was the principle, not the money. Six years of the same chair and same conversation about his boat, gone over two bucks. How do you all handle price bumps without losing your long timers?
