Told a guy "trust me" on a 3 guard fade and it actually worked

Kid came in last Saturday wanting a skin fade but his hair grows in three different directions. I grabbed my clippers, flipped the guard to a 3, and just went with the grain first instead of fighting it. Ended up the cleanest fade I've cut in a month. Any of you ever abandon your usual routine and have it pay off?
