PSA: My offset smoker has a 6 inch stack and a buddy says I should cut it down to 4. Do I chop it or leave it?
I picked up a used offset in Fort Worth about 2 months ago and it runs fine but it eats charcoal like crazy. My buddy runs a 4 inch stack on his and swears it holds heat better. I’m worried if I cut mine the draw gets weak and I get stale smoke. Has anyone here swapped stack sizes on an offset? Did your temps and fuel use actually change or am I over thinking this?
Stack size is one of those things guys argue about forever and nobody ever has real numbers. Your buddy probably just wants to feel right about his setup. Unless your temps are actually swinging bad or the smoke tastes dirty, I would leave the thing alone and mess with your fire management first.
