Am I the only one who switched from bearing pullers to a heat gun and blowtorch on stuck bottom brackets?
Last Tuesday I had a 1990s Trek in the stand at the shop in Madison with a bottom bracket that would not budge, and my $70 bearing puller just chewed up the plastic cups while a $20 heat gun plus a quick pass with a torch got it spinning in 4 minutes. The puller put all the force in one spot and cracked the shell, but the heat let the loctite let go and the threads came free without any damage. Has anyone else given up on pullers for seized parts, or am I asking for trouble with heat near aluminum frames?
That "let the loctite let go" bit is so real, heat just works where force fails. I mangled a set of cups on an old Cannondale and swore off pullers for BBs after that, torch and patience every time now. Just keep the flame moving and you won't cook the aluminum.
