My quick chain trick backfired on a long ride
I used to adjust chain tension by just pulling on it, thinking it was close enough. Halfway through a century ride, the chain derailed and bent a link. I had to walk five miles to the nearest shop. Now I always use a chain checker tool and follow the specs.

Man, the part about walking five miles really hits home. I had a similar thing happen once, not checking my chain properly before a big ride. That feeling when it goes wrong miles from anywhere is just the worst. Now I'm super careful about chain wear and tension too. It's crazy how such a small thing can ruin your whole day.

My old Schwinn gave out near mile marker 12. The chain snapped because I hadn't lubed it in months. I used to think chain care was for serious riders only. Dragging that bike three miles home changed my tune fast. Now I check links and tension before every weekend ride. That walk sucks, but it teaches you quick.

Walking five miles changed my mind about skipping chain checks.
