Unpopular opinion: a $12 chain checker beats eyeballing chain wear every time
I used to just grab the chain and pull it off the front ring to guess if it was stretched, and I bet I let three or four cassettes die early because of it. Two weeks ago a customer rolled in with skipping under load on a 11 speed road bike, and my eyeball guess said the chain was fine. I dropped a cheap chain checker in and it read 0.75 percent wear, so the chain was done and the cassette was already chewed up too. That one tool has saved me way more in comebacks than the cost of the tool, and it takes about five seconds per bike. I now check every bike that comes through the stand, even if the rider swears the drivetrain feels great. Anyone here using the Park CC-4 versus the basic go/no-go style, and does the 0.5 percent one actually catch stuff earlier in real life?
