My gear got so wet I couldn't tell if the sparks were from the connection or my own shorts.

Three weeks ago I was fishing a creek in the sierra nevadas and my goretex jacket started leaking through the seams. I think you might be overreacting a little bit here. Getting gear wet is annoying but it usually isn't a safety issue unless you are doing something really dumb. A little water on your connections shouldn't cause sparks unless you have exposed wires or a short somewhere. Maybe check your setup before blaming the rain.
