Spent $95 on an infrared thermometer for forge work and my eyes tell me more
I picked up an infrared thermometer gun for $95 at a tool shop in Akron back in March, thinking it would help me dial in my forge temp without staring into the fire. Turns out the reading bounces all over the place depending on the scale and the flame, so I went back to judging heat by color and a magnet, which has worked fine for me for 12 years. Does anyone here actually trust a temp gun for judging steel heat, or am I right that it's mostly a waste of cash?
