Two years of fighting my forge welds, and a $12 fire brick finally fixed it
For about two years I could not get a decent forge weld to save my life. I was stacking 4 or 5 layers of 1084 and 15n20, cranking the propane way up, and just burning the steel every single time. Then a guy at the supply shop in Tulsa told me my problem was heat loss, not heat, and sold me a soft fire brick for about $12 to close off the back of my forge. First try after that, out of 3 billets, 2 welded clean on the first heat. Now I run the forge doors mostly shut, watch the color instead of the gauge, and my success rate is maybe 8 out of 10 instead of 1 out of 5. The funny part is I spent months blaming my flux and my hammer technique when it was really just cold air sneaking in the back. Anyone else here had a cheap fix that solved something they chased for way too long?
