Deleted a photo album by accident, then my sister's backup comment hit different

So I was cleaning out my phone last Tuesday and somehow swiped away a whole album of pics from our trip to Portland. My sister saw me panicking and just said, "You really trust the cloud that much?" That stuck with me because I didn't have a backup, I just thought I did. I mean, is it my fault for not checking the settings, or is the app too easy to delete stuff by accident? Has anyone else lost something important that way and figured out a better system?

idk man, I started dumping everything into a second drive every month after I lost a whole year of photos that way.
