My mom read my diary and grounded me for a month at 15, and for 12 years I said it wrecked our trust
I used to retell that diary story at every family thing, like it was the reason I moved two states away from Akron. Last month my mom had knee surgery and I stayed at her house for 9 days, and I found the diary in a shoebox in her closet, along with a note she wrote in 2011 that says she read it because my grades dropped and she was scared, not nosy. Here is what got me: she never once brought up the stuff I wrote about my boyfriend, not even when we fought about him at dinner that spring. I had built a whole case against her for something she did out of fear, and she just took the blame and let me be mad for a decade. I'm not saying reading a kid's diary is fine, but I am saying I had the whole story wrong. Has anyone else found out later that the parent they were mad at had a reason they never explained?
