I finally quit being the guy who explains the rules before we even open the box
Hosted game night at my place in Reno on Friday and decided to just set up Catan, deal the cards, and let everyone figure it out as we went instead of doing my usual 15 minute rules speech. My buddy Dave, who usually zones out during explanations, actually ended up teaching the trade mechanic to the other two players by round three. We finished our first full game in about 70 minutes, which is a record for our group. Turns out I was the thing slowing us down this whole time. Does anyone else just hand people the rulebook and walk away, or is that too much of a gamble with new folks?
