My group kicked out a player for ruining games with strict rules

He argued every little detail until no one was having fun. We decided it was better to play without him than deal with constant interruptions.

Was it one of those situations where the rulebook basically became another player? I got stuck with a guy who would pause combat for ten minutes to look up exact distances on a grid map, like we were surveying land instead of fighting a dragon. It just sucks all the momentum and joy right out of the room. Sometimes you have to make the hard call so the game can actually be a game again, you know?

Oh man, this hits close to home. I've definitely been the one nitpicking rules before (like arguing whether a dice roll counts if it fell off the table, stuff like that). It's easy to get caught up in the details and forget we're just trying to have fun. My friends had to gently remind me that house rules exist for a reason. Now I try to loosen up, but old habits die hard. Good on your group for focusing on fun over perfect play.

Still debating phantom dice rolls in my sleep.
