Watched a guy at the Beaumont refinery job site re-roll a tube by hand and it changed how I check my roller settings
I was on a turnaround in Beaumont, Texas a few weeks back and this older boilermaker showed me something with the tube expander that I never thought about. I had been running the same torque settings for years on every job, figured if it passed hydro I was good. He told me to come watch him re-roll a couple tubes on a boiler that had failed a hydro test. Three tubes out of the whole bank were weeping and everyone was ready to cut them out. He cleaned them up and re-rolled at a lower torque in two passes instead of one hard pass. Held fine on the retest. I've been thinking about it since because I always crank it once and move on. He said the metal doesn't want to be forced, it wants to be eased into it. That stuck with me more than it probably should have. Curious if anyone else does two passes on their rolls or if I've just been doing it wrong for 14 years.
