Bought a fancy book stand for my book club debates and it totally backfired

I spent like 40 bucks on this metal stand that holds your book open with those springy arms. Thought it would be great for our book club meetings so I could have my notes and the book both visible. But the thing kept sliding off my lap and once it tipped over and spilled coffee all over my copy of the group read. Now I just use a old music stand I borrowed from my kid, works way better. Has anyone else found a cheap fix for holding books open during discussions?

Oh I feel your pain on this one. My husband got me one of those fancy book stands with the wire page holders for Christmas and it was a total disaster. Every time I tried to flip a page the whole thing would wobble and I'd have to grab it before it crashed to the floor. The springs are way too tight on mine, they leave dents in the pages. I actually ended up just sticking a cheap wooden cookbook holder from the dollar store on my desk and it works fine for book club stuff. Those springy arm things are overengineered nonsense if you ask me.

Those springy arm things are the worst, I had one that snapped clean off and hit me in the forehead. Ended up using an old music stand from my daughter's middle school band days and it's been perfect ever since.
