PSA: Our club's debate on 'The Overstory' lasted 47 minutes before anyone mentioned the actual trees.
It mattered because it showed we were all just arguing about the human characters' personal drama, completely missing the book's point about the forest itself.

Ever get so caught up in the people stuff you forget the actual point? I did that with a nature doc once, argued about the narrator's voice for an hour. We are all just terrible at seeing the forest for the trees, I guess.

Oh man, that reminds me of my film class last year. We spent a whole week on that movie about the whale, you know the one. The professor had to stop us because we were just fighting about the family's messed up relationships. He was like, "People, the movie is literally called The Whale. It's a metaphor. Talk about the whale." We totally missed it.
