Unpopular opinion: a guy at my book club said audiobooks do not count as reading, and I am still mad about it
At our meeting in Boise last Tuesday, a retired teacher named Gary cut off a mom mid-sentence to say that listening to a book is cheating and she should be embarrassed. She had finished 14 books that way while driving her kids to school, and he would not let it go for 20 minutes. Why do so many clubs still treat one format as the only real way to read?
Hold on, he cut her off and told her she should be embarrassed? That is wild behavior for a grown man at a book club. She read 14 books while driving her kids around, which is way more than most people get through sitting on a couch. Gary sounds like the kind of guy who thinks his way is the only way and needs everyone to agree with him. Stories have been told out loud for thousands of years, so listening is literally the oldest way to take in a book. Why does he get to decide what counts and what does not?
