Oh wow, that's honestly kind of horrifying. I can't imagine trying to read a novel or an old paperback and just getting hit with that damp, rotting leaves smell. Like, my cookbooks already have enough issues with food stains, adding a compost heap aroma would just be the final nail. That glue must be seriously potent.

Ever think that smell is part of the charm? It makes an old book feel real, like it has a history.

That "compost heap aroma" line got me. But honestly, the worst old book smell for me isn't the paper, it's the cigarette smoke. I picked up a used copy of a novel once that reeked so bad of old ashtray it gave me a headache. The smell of history is one thing, the smell of someone's 1980s chain-smoking habit is another. It totally ruins the vibe.
