Appreciation post: I finally watched The Wire on my phone during my 50 minute bus ride, and it beat my old plan of saving shows for the couch
For two years I was strict about only watching big shows at home on the TV, because I thought a phone screen would wreck the whole thing. Last month my commute from Renton to downtown added up to about 8 hours a week, so I gave up and started The Wire in 20 minute chunks on the bus. Turns out the show is built for it. Each scene is long and talky, so catching two or three a trip felt natural, and the recap at the start of each episode kept me straight. I got through all five seasons in about 6 weeks, which never would have happened waiting for free evenings at home. My old rule was really just fear of missing the "real" way to watch something, not a real problem. Now I have a whole queue of slow dramas I save for the bus. Anyone else find that a commute is actually better for certain shows than your living room?
My big brain move was saving Breaking Bad for "the right moment" for like three years and then watching half of season five on a plane to Spokane. You are right that the phone screen fear is mostly in our heads. The Wire is all talking heads in rooms anyway, so a small screen loses almost nothing, and those bus chunks match the pacing way better than trying to binge six hours on a Saturday. My couch rule just meant I never actually watched anything, which is a pretty bad system. Slow burns like The Wire or Deadwood almost play better in 20 minute bites because you sit with each scene instead of drifting off.
