The week we laid 4,000 brick in 3 days on a church in Kalamazoo and my hands quit on me
Back in 2011 I was on a crew doing a small church job in Kalamazoo, and we had a stretch that still sticks with me. The GC wanted the front wall done before Sunday service, so me and two other guys laid close to 4,000 brick in 3 days. First two days were great, mortar was mixing perfect, corners were dead on, and we were flying with a lead who kept a clean line and never rushed the trowel. Third day my left hand cramped up so bad I dropped a half brick off the scaffold, and the guy below me just laughed and said thats the wall telling you to slow down. We finished the wall at 6pm Friday, and the pastor brought out cold pop and a box of donuts. I sat on the tailgate and couldnt even open my water bottle. The thing I miss about that job is how quiet the trade felt back then, no one texting bids, no laser levels on every lift, just string line and a story. Now I look at young guys with fancy levels and wonder how theyd handle that kind of push. What was the longest run you ever did on one wall before your body tapped out?
