Pro tip: the $15 meat grinder I almost returned saved my grocery bill
I bought a cheap hand crank meat grinder about 8 months ago for $15 at a flea market in Fresno, mostly because I felt sorry for the guy selling it. It sat in my cabinet for weeks and I actually went back to return it, but he was gone. Then I tried grinding up the cheap cuts, like chuck and pork shoulder that go on sale for $2.99 a pound instead of the $6.99 ground beef. The first batch took me about 15 minutes of cranking, which felt like forever, but the meat tasted better than the store stuff and I could mix in onions and spices. Now I do a big batch every two weeks and freeze it in flat bags, and I figure I save around $40 a month on ground meat alone. The grinder paid for itself in the first week. My only regret is not buying the clamp style sooner, because the suction base slips if you rush. Does anyone else grind their own meat to stretch the budget, or do you just wait for the markdown stickers?
