Best travel day ever was totally unplanned in Hanoi
I was wandering around Hanoi last March and stumbled into this tiny alley eatery that only had 3 plastic stools. The lady didn't speak English but just pointed at a bowl, charged me 20,000 dong (like 85 cents), and served the best pho I've ever had. Then I walked to Hoan Kiem Lake and randomly caught a group of locals practicing tai chi with these huge fans. The whole day cost me less than $10 including the bus rides around the city. Anyone else have a cheap day abroad that felt way more valuable than any expensive tour?

That alley lady probably ran her whole life on way less than what most of us waste on fancy guided tours.

You brought up "fancy guided tours" and it got me thinking. How much of that tour money actually goes back to the local people versus some corporate office downtown anyway? Because if that alley lady was scraping by on pocket change, wouldn't the real waste be on experiences that don't help the folks who actually live there? Isn't that the whole point of travel, to see what's real?
