Why does everyone book hostels near the train station, that's where the prices are highest

I was in Lisbon last month and kept seeing people complain about hostel prices on forums. I paid 18 euros a night for a place 15 minutes from the main station, while the ones right next to it were going for 35 plus. The walk was totally fine and I used the metro for 1.50 euros anyway. Same thing happened in Budapest, the further from the tourist core, the better the deal and less noise at 3am. Do people just not bother checking the city maps before they book, or is the convenience actually worth double the cost for some of you?
