Why does nobody talk about how much money hostels actually cost now?

I booked a hostel in Barcelona for 4 nights back in March because I thought I was being smart with my budget. I paid 42 euros a night for a 12-bed dorm with no breakfast and no towel included. I remember staying at a hostel in Prague in 2019 for like 12 bucks a night and it came with free pancakes and a locker you could actually trust. What tipped me off was when I added up the extras - 5 euros for towel rental, 3 euros for luggage storage, 10 euros for a so-called 'social dinner' that was just spaghetti - and realized my budget trip cost almost as much as a hotel. I ended up spending 215 euros total for 4 nights in a room with 11 strangers who snored like chainsaws. Has anyone else noticed hostel prices creeping into hotel territory or am I just picking the wrong spots?
