Serious question, ever try to work without your toner for a day?

I got lazy and left my tone generator in the truck for a whole shift. Had to trace a line in a crawlspace and guessed which cable was for the TV. Cut into the wrong one and killed the phone line for the whole house. Back to using the toner every time, no exceptions.

My first phone company job had us skip the toner on most house calls. We learned the layouts and rarely messed up.

When the_tyler says the toner removes all doubt, that's only part of the story. After you've seen enough houses, you start to notice the same cable runs and colors in most modern builds. I've saved a lot of time over the years by not dragging my toner out for every simple job, and real mistakes are few and far between. It's about using your eyes and knowing the common setups, not just relying on the tool every single time.

That method sounds like a recipe for trouble down the line. Every house is wired differently, especially in older places where people DIY everything. Guessing based on layout might work until you hit a crawlspace full of unmarked cables, like the original post said. The toner is the one tool that removes all doubt, so skipping it just to save a minute isn't worth the callback. Getting lazy with the basics is how you end up cutting the wrong line and having a really bad day.
