Hot take: that seam sealer everyone skips is why your rainfly is leaking
I've been camping up in the Cascades for about 15 years and I keep seeing the same thing in reviews and on the trail. People buy a brand new tent, use it 3 or 4 times, and then complain that the rainfly leaks at the seams during a storm. I watched a guy at a campground near Bend last August cussing out his tent in the rain and when I walked over, the seams on his fly were bare fabric with no sealant at all. What most folks do not get is that factory tape on seams fails over time because of heat, cold, and folding. I bought a $9 tube of seam grip in 2019 and re-did all my seam lines once a season, and I have not had a single drip since. Most of the bad reviews I read about tents being "trash in heavy rain" come down to this one step nobody does. If you're headed out this weekend, check your fly seams under a lamp before you pack, you'll see the gaps. Has anyone else had a tent fail on them and later figured out it was just a seam issue?
