Talked to a park ranger in Montana who swore by a $15 camp stove over my $300 one
He said the cheap one never failed him in 20 years, and my fancy one broke on the third trip. Has anyone else found that simpler gear just holds up better in the long run?

Third trip broke" sounds like you're just hard on gear.

Double down on that thought. If someone's frame breaks after just a few trips, it's usually user error or they bought something super cheap. I've seen people toss their tent in a heap wet and wonder why the poles snap, or jam a bag so full the zippers blow out. Gear has limits, but most basic stuff from a solid brand can handle a season of normal camping if you take care of it. What kind of stuff did they break?
