Appreciation post: How I used to pile on callouts vs. now giving people space to learn

I used to jump into every Twitter thread about some old tweet from 2012 and hit retweet without thinking, but after a buddy in my landscaping crew got raked over the coals for a dumb joke he made at 19, I started asking if people actually grew from it. Now I wait a week, see if the person apologizes or explains, and then decide if it's worth my energy. Has anyone else softened their stance after watching a real life friend get cancelled over something minor?

Actually waiting a full week might be too long in some cases. If someone's getting death threats or losing their job over something dumb, that week of silence can look like they're hiding or don't care. I've seen it happen with a buddy who waited too long to address a stupid tweet and by the time he apologized everyone had already made up their minds about him. There's a difference between giving people space to learn and just letting the mob dictate the timeline.
