I stopped arguing with people in the comments and started asking for receipts, and it totally changed how I handle callouts
So here's the thing I figured out after getting dragged into a messy situation about a local musician in my town. About 4 months ago a guy I know got called out on Facebook for something he supposedly said at a show, and I jumped in to defend him because I thought I knew the story. Big mistake. The thread blew up to like 300 comments and I spent two evenings fighting strangers, and I honestly didn't have a single fact, just my gut feeling that he was a good dude. Then someone in the thread just calmly asked, "can anyone link the actual post or a video" and the whole thing fell apart because there wasn't one. Turns out it was a game of telephone from a drunk conversation at a bar in Kalamazoo. Now when I see a callout, the first thing I do is look for the original source, not the reaction to it. If there's no link, no screenshot, no date, I just wait. My rule now is simple: if I can't find the first post myself in 5 minutes, I don't have an opinion yet. Has anyone else tried the "find the original source first" thing, or do you just stay out of it completely?
