My mechanic in Reno talked me out of fixing a $900 transmission leak, and I drove that beater 40,000 more miles
Six months back my 2004 Civic was leaving a puddle the size of a dinner plate in the driveway, and every shop in town quoted me $900 to $1,200 for a rear main seal job on a car worth maybe $2,500. I used to be the guy who fixed every drip right away, but my mechanic said to just top off the oil every 1,000 miles and watch the level instead of pulling the transmission. Is a slow leak that cheap to manage really trash, or am I just fooling myself until it turns into a real problem?
