My neighbor's junked 2004 Camry taught me a lesson about rust spots

Last Tuesday I was helping my neighbor load his old Camry onto a tow truck for the scrapyard. He pointed at a quarter sized rust bubble near the wheel well and said 'that hole is why I'm not sinking another penny into this thing.' At first I thought he was overreacting, but then I looked closer and the whole frame rail underneath was flaking apart. I've been debating whether to patch up the rust on my 2001 Corolla for about 6 months now, and I always figured a little sanding and some bondo would buy me another couple of seasons. Seeing how fast that spread from a speck to a structural mess made me realize I need to check my own car before it turns into a bigger headache. Has anyone else caught rust that looked surface level but ended up being way deeper once you started cutting into it? I'm trying to decide if the $150 in materials is worth it or if I should just start planning for a replacement.
