The $60 Harbor Freight jack I swore off now saves my back every time
I spent years hauling my dad's old 3-ton floor jack around because it was 'built right,' even though it took 20 pumps just to clear a curb. Then my brother in Phoenix laughed at me and showed me his low-profile aluminum one he got on sale, and I finally tried it on my Civic. Has anyone else held onto 'quality' gear that was actually just heavy and slow, or am I the only dummy who likes suffering?
The crazy part is how we tell ourselves the heavy stuff is somehow safer, like the extra weight alone is proof of build quality. But a jack that fights you every pump actually makes the job MORE dangerous, you get tired, you rush, you cut corners. My old steel one was so slow I'd start skipping the jack stands just to get it over with, which is the dumbest thing a guy can do under a car. The best tool is the one you'll actually use right, not the one that impresses people on the internet. Your back and your patience both win when the gear just works.
