Cedar deck turned gray in 5 weeks, board sealer failed

I put a whole new cedar deck on a lake house near Brainerd at the end of June. Used a big box store sealer, followed the can exactly, two coats. By mid-August it looked like it had been sitting in the weather for 5 years, no protection at all. Anyone else had a finish just give up that fast, or did I get a bad batch?

Every cedar deck in full sun will gray out that fast no matter what sealer you used, especially near a lake with that much UV. Maybe the finish wasn't the problem, just the board choice.
