Tried pocket screws on a red oak stair rail in Bend and the joint split on me
I was building a handrail out of 1 inch red oak last Tuesday and figured pocket screws would beat waiting on glue to dry, so I ran them in at the usual angle on 6 test joints. Four of the six split right along the grain because oak is so hard the screw acts like a wedge, even with the coarse thread ones. Do you all predrill bigger or just stick to dowels and glue on hard woods like this?
